Contemporary is not a period, it is the present tense — what is being built right now. That makes it the one style that keeps moving: today it means soft geometry, low-contrast neutrals, matte finishes and furniture with visible but unfussy craft. It is often confused with modern, which is a fixed mid-century vocabulary; contemporary borrows from whatever is current and drops it when it dates.

Applied to the bathroom, this style works best when the layout fundamentals are right first. Bathrooms reward continuity: run one tile or stone across floor and wet walls to make a small space read larger, and put niches in the shower instead of shelves. Lighting at the mirror should come from the sides or a backlit panel — a single overhead light casts unflattering shadows.
