AI Masterplan and Site Plan Rendering (2026)

How do you turn a masterplan or site plan into an aerial render with AI? Upload the plan as an image (PDF screenshot, JPG or a clean CAD export) to Archome's Plan & Render tool, let the AI read the layout, state the scale and style in a prompt such as “aerial view of a 20-hectare mixed-use district, late afternoon, mature trees along the streets”, and render. It takes about 30 seconds, runs in the browser with no GPU, and the free start of 100 credits covers one plan read (60 credits) plus one render (30). Archome is our product; this guide also covers what the tool cannot do and what else to use.

Updated 5 November 2026. Credit costs and prices below come from our current price list; competitor prices are not quoted because we did not re-check vendor pages for this update.

Key takeaways

  • What goes in: a site plan, masterplan, floor plan or an aerial viewport capture from a 3D model, as an image.
  • What comes out: a photorealistic image: an aerial of a site, an isometric dollhouse view of a building, or furnished eye-level rooms.
  • What it costs at Archome: reading a plan into editable geometry is 60 credits, each render is 30 credits. The free start is 100 credits once, no card.
  • What it is not: a presentation image, not a measured drawing. Proportions follow the plan but are not dimensioned, so keep your CAD plans for anything priced or built.
  • Best use: committee boards, developer pitches, competition hero images and quick comparison of layout options, before you commit to a full 3D model.

What is AI masterplan rendering?

A masterplan or site plan is a flat drawing: building footprints, roads, blocks, paths, planting and open space seen from above. Clients, committees and residents often find that hard to read. An aerial render shows the same layout as buildings, trees, paving and water in light, which is the version people respond to.

Traditionally that image means building a site model in 3D software, adding entourage and rendering, which can take days or be outsourced. AI rendering skips most of the modelling: you give the system the plan and a description, and it produces the view. The road structure and block layout come from your plan; the buildings, planting, materials and sky come from the model's interpretation of your prompt.

That last point is the important one. AI masterplan rendering is a concept and communication tool. It is quick and it looks convincing, but the buildings are invented to fit the footprints. It is not a substitute for a modelled scheme with agreed heights and massing.

What inputs work best for a site plan render?

InputWorks well forWatch out for
Clean site plan or masterplan (PDF screenshot, JPG, PNG)Road structure, block layout, plot boundariesHeavy annotation, hatching and dimension strings confuse the reading; export a clean version
CAD export (line work only)Precise footprints and street geometryLayers left on; turn off text and dimensions first
Aerial capture from a 3D model (SketchUp, Rhino, Revit)Real massing: heights stay as modelledNeeds a model; see the SketchUp plugin
Photo of a printed planQuick checks in the fieldPerspective distortion and shadows; straighten and crop first
Building floor planApartments, offices, housesUse floor plan to 3D for this; enter the building width so scale is right

If you start from a 3D model, the aerial capture keeps your massing because the heights are in the image. If you start from a 2D plan, the AI chooses building heights and styles, so say what you want in the prompt (“four-storey perimeter blocks, flat roofs, low-rise townhouses along the park”).

How do you render a masterplan with Archome, step by step?

  1. Prepare the plan. Crop to the site, remove title blocks and dimension strings, and keep line work clear. A clean image reads better than a busy CAD sheet.
  2. Upload it in Plan & Render. Open /tools/masterplan and upload the image. Enter the outer width so scale is correct for building-scale plans.
  3. Read the plan (60 credits). Click “Read & create plan”. The AI traces walls, doors, windows and furniture into editable objects in about 30 seconds. For a site plan you can skip straight to rendering from the image and prompt.
  4. Fix what was misread. Drag walls or objects into place. Treat the result as a draft and compare it with your source drawing.
  5. Choose the style and write a scale-aware prompt. Pick a masterplan style (residential complex, mixed use, university campus, business park, urban neighbourhood, resort) and add details: scale, time of day, planting, height of buildings.
  6. Render (30 credits). About 30 seconds later you have the aerial. Run two or three variations to compare layouts or lighting.
  7. Finish. Upscale to 4K with the enhancer for a printed board, or use landscape AI for planting detail.

What should you write in the prompt?

Three things carry a masterplan render: scale, character and light. A prompt that includes all three gives the model something to work with.

ElementWeak promptStronger prompt
Scale“city”“aerial view of a 20-hectare mixed-use district”
Character“modern buildings”“four to six storey residential blocks, retail at ground level, green courtyards, a central plaza”
Landscape“trees”“mature street trees, a water feature in the park, permeable paving”
Light and mood“nice weather”“late afternoon, low warm sun, long soft shadows”

Keep the prompt about what to add, not about changing the layout: the layout should come from your plan. If a render invents streets or moves blocks, shorten the prompt and tighten the plan image.

How much does AI masterplan rendering cost?

At Archome the cost is counted in credits per action, so you can price a job before you start.

ActionCredits
Read a plan into editable geometry60
Render a plan, masterplan or aerial30
OptionPriceWhat it covers
Free start$0, 100 credits once, no cardOne plan read (60) plus one render (30)
Lite$29/month, 1,000 creditsAbout 11 plans read and rendered, or 33 plan renders
Plus$49/month, 3,000 creditsAbout three times the Lite volume
Credit packs$15 / $39 / $99 one time (500 / 1,500 / 5,000 credits)Valid 12 months; no subscription needed

A worked example: read one plan (60), then render three variations (3 x 30 = 90) is 150 credits, which is $4.35 on Lite at $29 per 1,000 credits. For a one-off competition or a single board, a $15 pack for 500 credits is a better fit than a subscription. Credits from monthly plans do not roll over; pack credits last 12 months. Current prices are always on the pricing page.

Paid plans and packs include a commercial licence for client presentations, planning packs and developer brochures. For outsourced rendering price tables with sources, see 3D architectural rendering cost.

How is this different from V-Ray, Lumion or Twinmotion?

AI plan render (Archome)Real-time or physically based renderer
Starts fromA 2D plan image or a viewport captureA full 3D site model
Time to first imageAbout a minute, including the readHours to days to build the model
HardwareBrowser, no GPUA capable GPU or a render farm
Building heights and formInterpreted from your prompt (unless you start from a 3D capture)Exact, as modelled
RepeatabilityEach render variesSame model, same result
Best forConcept stage, options, early pitchesApproved schemes, submissions that need accuracy

The sensible workflow is to use AI for the early options and pitch images, then build the model and use a physically based renderer for the scheme that wins. Related guides: Twinmotion vs AI rendering and V-Ray vs AI rendering.

Where Archome falls short for masterplans

  • It is not a measured drawing. Block proportions follow the plan, but dimensions, setbacks, areas and heights are not guaranteed. Never present a render as the dimensioned scheme.
  • Heights are guesses without a 3D capture. From a 2D plan the AI decides how tall things are. If massing matters to the planning argument, start from a model capture instead.
  • It can misread cluttered plans. Heavy hatching, overlapping layers and dense text lower the quality of the reading. Always compare the read plan with your source.
  • No GIS or CAD output. The plan read can be exported as PNG, PDF or an Archome project file. It is not a DWG, a Revit model or a shapefile.
  • Results vary. You may need two or three renders to get a view you like, which should be budgeted in credits.
  • Not a replacement for site analysis. It does not know your topography, orientation or regulations.

What else can you do with the same plan?

Once you have an approved aerial, the same account can push it further. Use landscape AI for planting and open-space detail, the 4K enhancer for print, and video for a fly-over clip. For a single building on the site, exterior AI is the more direct tool, and for the apartment layouts inside it, floor plan to 3D walks through reading and rendering a plan step by step. If your starting point is a SketchUp model, the free SketchUp plugin renders the viewport from inside the app; see best AI rendering tools for SketchUp for the options.

FAQ

Can AI render a site plan into an aerial view? Yes. Upload the site plan as an image, state the scale and style in the prompt, and render. The road structure and block layout come from the plan; buildings, planting and light come from the prompt. Treat the result as a concept image, not a measured one.

How long does AI masterplan rendering take? Reading a plan and rendering each take about 30 seconds in Archome. Allow a few minutes for two or three variations.

How much does it cost to render a masterplan with AI? At Archome, reading a plan is 60 credits and each render is 30. The free start of 100 credits covers one read and one render. Lite is $29 per month for 1,000 credits, and one-time packs start at $15 for 500 credits.

Do I need a 3D model for a masterplan render? No. A 2D plan image is enough. If you have a 3D model, an aerial capture keeps your building heights, which the AI otherwise decides itself.

What file formats can I upload? Upload an image: a PDF screenshot, JPG or PNG, a clean CAD export or a photo of a printed plan. Export CAD as an image rather than uploading DWG files.

Is the plan editable after the AI reads it? Yes. Walls, doors, windows and furniture become objects you can drag, rotate, duplicate or delete, and the 3D view updates from the same data. It is not a DWG or RVT file.

Can I use masterplan renders in planning submissions or client pitches? Yes, with a paid plan or credit pack, which includes a commercial licence. Remember the render is a presentation image rather than a dimensioned drawing; keep your CAD plans for anything priced or built.

Can it render a large site, such as a whole district? Yes, from a single block to a district. State the scale in your prompt, for example “aerial view of a 20-hectare mixed-use district”, so the level of detail matches.
