Free Virtual Staging in 2026: Zillow, CRMLS and the Catch

Updated 5 October 2026. Prices and programme terms below were read on the vendors' own pages and announcements on 4 October 2026; where a vendor hides a number we say so. Archome AI is the tool we make; it appears in the price table under the same rules as everyone else.

Yes, in 2026 some virtual staging is genuinely free, but only for some agents, some listings and a few photos a month. Two programmes changed the floor: Zillow built AI staging into Showcase listings in September 2025, and the California Regional MLS (CRMLS) has bundled REimagineHome credits for its members since January 2025. Outside those two doors, "free" means a trial, a watermark or a handful of credits. This guide lays out what each free route gives you, where it stops, and what the paid options cost per photo today.

Quick answer

If you list on Zillow Showcase, buyers can already see your empty rooms furnished in several styles at no extra charge. If you are a CRMLS member, you get 30 REimagineHome credits a month, roughly five listings, free. Everyone else gets a trial: a few credits or watermarked images. The moment you need more than a handful of photos, the same furniture across several angles, furniture removal, an exterior, a print-ready file or an MLS-compliant label, you are in paid territory, which in 2026 runs from about $0.29 to $2.67 per AI photo and $16 to $30 per human-edited photo.

The three free routes, side by side

When free is enough

  • One empty living room on a Showcase listing. Zillow's built-in staging does the job where buyers look first.
  • A CRMLS agent with two to five listings a month. Thirty credits cover the hero shots if you stage one or two rooms per listing.
  • Testing whether AI staging suits your market. A trial on your own photo tells you more than any review.

When you will pay, and what it costs

Free routes break at the same six points, and they are the points that sell a house rather than decorate a page:

  1. Volume. A whole shoot is 15 to 30 rooms. Five free listings a month do not cover a team.
  2. The same furniture from several angles. Photographers on the Matterport forums name multi-angle consistency as the number one gap in AI staging. It is a paid feature where it exists at all.
  3. Occupied homes. Furniture removal before staging is bundled in paid plans at Virtual Staging AI, Apply Design and Collov; free tiers usually stage only empty rooms.
  4. Exteriors, day-to-dusk and renovations. Free staging is interior-only.
  5. MLS compliance. A "virtually staged" label burned into the image (Gepetto's Agency tier, Pedra's label tool) and the untouched original kept beside it. Our disclosure guide covers the rules by MLS and portal.
  6. Files you own. Full-resolution, print-ready images with a commercial licence for portals, brochures and ads.

Two things the table hides. First, auto-renewal: the lowest Trustpilot scores in this category go to tools that bill annually by default, so read the billing toggle before you click. Second, remedies: most paid staging tools give you regenerations, revisions or a credit back when a result is wrong; a trial gives you nothing. On Archome AI a staged photo takes about 30 seconds and the 100 signup credits are enough for a full listing before you decide.

How to use free and paid together

Stage the hero room with whatever is free to you, then measure. If showings or saves move, buy the cheapest plan that covers your monthly room count and keep the originals and the label workflow in place from day one. Our photo checklist shows how to shoot so the AI gets it right the first time, which matters most when every retry costs a credit.

Frequently asked questions

Is virtual staging free on Zillow? On Showcase listings, yes: since September 2025 Zillow furnishes empty rooms with AI at no separate charge and lets buyers pick a style. Standard Zillow listings do not get it.

How do I get free virtual staging through my MLS? CRMLS members get 30 REimagineHome credits a month, about five listings, since January 2025. Other MLSs announce partner programmes from time to time; check your member benefits page.

Is there a completely free virtual staging app with no watermark? Not for ongoing use. Trials are watermarked or capped at a few credits; Virtual Staging AI lets you try one image without signing up, Archome AI gives 100 credits once.

What does virtual staging cost in 2026? AI tools charge $0.29 to $2.67 per photo at entry tiers and $0.08 to $0.53 at volume; human staging runs $16 to $30 per photo with a day or two of turnaround.

Do free staged photos need a disclosure? Yes. The MLS and portal rules apply to the image, not to what you paid for it: label it virtually staged and keep the original available.

Can free tools remove existing furniture? Rarely. Furniture removal is a paid feature in most tools, including ours; free tiers stage empty rooms.
